Competency Development Curriculum Book
Section I provides the reader with a pragmatic approach to the physics of ultrasound. This section will help the user understand the fundamental concepts of ultrasound physics and instrumentation as is necessary to appropriately utilize ultrasound imaging technology for guiding procedures as central catheter insertions. A general understanding of these principles will allow the user to choose the appropriate instrument settings, identify appropriate blood vessels, optimize their approach, and safely guide the needle to the target.
Section II will build on the information learned in Section I and offer a more complete understanding of ultrasound system instrumentation and how images are generated by the ultrasound transducer and ultrasound system.
Section III uses the theory learned in earlier sections and applies it as the learner is introduced to ultrasound imaging, the ultrasound characteristics of various structures within the body, how to obtain images and how to optimize the ultrasound system settings during ultrasound guided central catheter insertions.
Section IV titled, “Using Ultrasound” leverages the groundwork established in the earlier chapters – information that is necessary for users to be a competent and knowledgeable ultrasound users – and moves towards using ultrasound as a tool to guide central venous access procedures. Beginning with an overview of specific anatomy and how it relates to ultrasound guided vascular access procedures, students learn how to identify vascular structures using blood vessel characterization with ultrasound imaging, and finally, the methods of using ultrasound to guide central catheter insertions. Specifics as room preparation, patient positioning, holding the ultrasound transducer, using needle guides vs. freehand needle guidance techniques, and sheathing the transducer to maintain a sterile field are discussed.
The reader tests their knowledge and builds confidence throughout the curriculum by completing quick quizzes and self assessment tests through the book. The written curriculum ends with a final test as the user verifies their retention of information learned in the book. The book also contains a competency checklist example allowing clinicians and program directors to establish knowledge and skill base.
Book: 118 pages: 8.5” x 11” (21.6cm x 27.9 cm)
